In this task we are required to choose an association of our decision and afterward investigate their vital human asset rehearses, we are required to see that how the practices and systems of HR division are lined up with the companys objective. What are the territories that are performing great and what the regions that need the improvement are? For this I have chosen driving telecom organization of UK. Vodafone has been the market head with their proceeded with development in UK and different pieces of the world. This paper will dissect two measurements, one is their methodologies for enlistment, determination, learning, improvement and preparing and I will clarify how these systems are amplifying representative execution and are connected with corporate techniques. The second piece of this paper will introduce the presentation the board procedures of the association we will how this association deals with the exhibition of their workers and how human asset division is dealing with the representative relations. Prologue to the Company Vodafone is a main telecom player in the UK and different pieces of the world including India. The items and administrations they give are of high caliber and elevated requirements and the market they are working is exceptionally serious. The idea of rivalry requires the administration of the organization to have a vital lucidity and all the business tasks ought to be working same way. Their administration portfolio incorporates cell phone association including 2G and 3G systems, broadband web in homes and on mobiles (www.vodafone.com, 2011). So as to comprehend the key human asset exercises of the association is critical to comprehend that what organization about is. Their vision esteems and business direction are the key drivers that are driving the human asset the executives division (www.vodafone.com, 2011). Organization Vision They see their future in remarkable information administrations and items sponsored up by the best client involvement with the business. Their excursion has just started, with things like Mobile Internet and Mobile Broadband. What's more, their Vodafone at home fixed broadband help. Effortlessness They make things basic for their clients, accomplices and partners. Trust They are solid and straightforward to manage. They convey for other people, and trust others to do similarly Writing Review of Strategic HRM: Key Human Resource Management is a cutting edge business idea that is presently being polished in a significant number of the associations, its adequacy and practice is expanding with the time as association have understood that this administration reasoning is really increasing the value of business gainfulness from various perspectives . As we realize that HR are one of the most significant assets of that an organization can have, their capacity to take an interest being developed of organizations supportable upper hand is irrefutable, in past the human asset the executives has been a different division with no impact and investment in vital administration of the organization. Whatever have been the corporate methodologies organizations were not connecting the HR the board with it. The consequence of which was the breaking down of companys goal and human asset the board, this situation made the human asset investment in maintainable upper hand restricted. (Appleby Mavin, 2000). With the advancement of present day business period, that has begun from 1980s, the administration specialists and analysts has been feeling the need of taking the organizations to one heading, and they have additionally understood that it significant that human asset office ought to be made piece of the methodology detailing process and their human asset systems ought to be made while remembering the business technique of the association. In this manner the analysts thought of the idea which is known as the Strategic Human Resource Management, that empowers the HR division to get their practices from the corporate procedure and they are additionally made part while making the business system (Armstrong, 2006). Key Human Resource Management requires the dept being proactive as opposed to being receptive, they are required to change themselves as per the human asset need of the organization. They are likewise required to anticipate the up and coming needs of the organization and afterward plan in advance in like manner (McMahan et al., 1998). Methodologies for Recruitment, Retention, Training Learning Vodafone is a market chief in their class, they have an upper hand due to their enhancement in items, administrations and advertising procedures, in this way their corporate target is to continue their promoting pioneer position with the assistance of their broadening. The following is the preview of HR methodologies for different HR elements of the association that discloses to us the association is connecting their business procedure with their human asset methodology: Enlistment Selection Vodafones enlistment and determination process is lined up with their business technique, as they are in the matter of offering types of assistance and their market position is a pioneer with separations, in this way when they enroll people on various seats, they have set of center skills that are required for each position and they check these while recruiting someone(Armstrong, 2006). Their choice procedure ensures that the perfect individual with right arrangement of limits and disposition is chosen, for instance in the event that they are employing for the situation of client support they would ensure that individual being recruited has the delicate aptitudes, the empathic mentality and isn't forceful in nature. They have formulated a lot of such delicate aptitudes that are assessed on every one of the employing and these abilities shift from position to position. For administrative level position they ensure they employ somebody with great diagnostic aptitude alongside flare of authority in them. So in Vodafone the whole choice procedure is connected with the corporate goals (Armstrong, 2006). Remuneration Benefits Vodafones whole pay and advantages are additionally connected with business methodology, their compensation frameworks and yearly examination frameworks are gotten from corporate technique. Since our case organization is working in exceptionally serious condition and they need to keep up their market administration position hence they have planned their pay framework that urges the quality individuation to work in this association. They furnish they representatives with best in class offices and compensation bundles so the best in the business are pulled in to work in the organization and afterward they have their impact in making the association a market chief (Armstrong, 2006). His yearly evaluation framework is additionally overseen deliberately, in Vodafone, each office has their quarterly and yearly targets, and these destinations are then used to make the individual and groups quarterly and yearly goals. Presently when execution examination is done, Vodafones human asset division makes the target accomplishment the piece of the evaluation framework and all the augmentations in pay and rewards are connected with the target accomplishment in groups and people. For their target accomplishment estimation they ensure that exhibition objective are time bound, quantifiable and quantifiable (Armstrong, 2006). Preparing Development Preparing and Development is a significant segment of their human asset methodology. They continue including an incentive in their HR via preparing them on hard ability and delicate aptitude whatever is required by the nature and job of the activity. The procedures start from indentifying the preparation needs of every one of the office. They in the wake of understanding the target of the every one of the division for the coming year, requests that the significant directors recognize and assess the people in their groups that require the preparation and improvement in specific territories of their activity. These preparation needs can be of delicate ability and furthermore can be of hard aptitudes that are legitimately identified with the activity (McMahan et al., 1998). When the preparation needs are indentified then human asset division deals with the preparation schedule of the year, in which all the necessary preparing are referenced and workers are sent for on work and off occupation preparing. Human asset division likewise have the eye on the forthcoming extensions and mechanical improvements in the market so the important representatives can be prepared before the time and they are prepared to work when there is any innovative progression and change in the association. Learning Human asset division of the association put exceptional accentuation on building up the learning society inside the association. Representatives are urged to impart their encounters and figuring out how to one another with the goal that colleagues can have a learning society in the association. Since Vodafone is working in various land locales of the province, in this way they ensure that representatives are supported the learnings in regards to specialized and promoting information with one another, so worker of one area can gain from the experience of the other district (Armstrong, 2006). As talked about above they additionally send worker on preparing, they likewise send various representatives of various division to their distinctive land advertises with the goal that they can have the preparation

The roles and impacts of computers and communications technology Essay Example for Free

The jobs and effects of PCs and correspondences innovation Essay What are the jobs and effects of PCs and interchanges innovation in the expansion of trans-fringe monetary movement? I am explicitly going to talk about outside specialists taking care of UK customer calls and IT employments when all is said in done, otherwise called offshoring or out-sourcing. Underneath I have attempted to out-line a portion of the great and awful focuses about the subject Advantages The backers of offshoring portray it as having high potential; moving occupations to a minimal effort work market will set aside cash and give a decent wellspring of work for the nearby individuals. Additionally as creating nations become more extravagant, they will likewise purchase more from us and put more in our economy. UK fares of products and ventures to India alone are as of now worth around à ¯Ã¢ ¿Ã¢ ½2.5billion every year, making sure about a great many UK employments. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) accept that the UK likewise stands to pick up from developing world thriving and a greater worldwide market for British merchandise and ventures. Offshoring will permit Britain to stay serious, guaranteeing that the UK economy keeps on producing new and economical occupations and new business openings. There is likewise the chance to pick up from worldwide associations. Issues Offshoring can negatively affect the assurance of staying inland staff; besides, the low wages seaward could squeeze remaining laborers compensation. The organization dangers worker's organization and open analysis, which could influence client faithfulness and fulfillment. Abroad laborers at call focuses might be not able to help past their preparation content, so there could be a decrease in quality. There are various difficulties the seaward workforce will confront: social contrasts may make troubles in shaping connections, overseeing remotely can be troublesome and the administration may require neighborhood information, for example, topography, or a comprehension of British frameworks, for example NHS My genuine belief I am completely tired of winding up in call focuses in India. It makes the entire experience extensive, unpleasant and baffling. I loathe not having the option to talk regularly, rehashing and spell nearly everything said and the entire experience is one I could manage without. I as of now have changed a bank thus. It Is strange. For what reason should individuals need to endure it? It appears to me only an approach to cause organizations to have a more advantageous main concern, additionally no official needs to surrender their advantages! As an understudy prospective searching for work in the UK, I am completely on the side of the individuals who hold the view that organizations that served mostly British clients should bolster employments in Britain. They ought to be rebuffed in the event that they dont, either by shopper boycotting or by government charges or both. Since numerous organizations are replicating each other because of corporate covetousness there is mass inundation of jobless exceptionally gifted specialists, without a spot for them to go, it will just take such a long time of being jobless for them to either move seaward themselves or move to another occupation. I think offshoring has an enormous portion of the fault for the activity deficiency here in Britain. Its astonishing to perceive how the meaning of modest work has changed from the start the term was just connected with individuals working in awful conditions for close to nothing. However, presently it reaches out to global organizations and partnerships moving gifted occupations abroad to set aside cash, all to the detriment of the British individuals. The following is a few articles I found that I think praise what I have composed. Bank clients fierceness at India call focuses 12:41pm eighteenth October 2005 Staff at Lloyds TSB are confronting significant levels of client disappointment about the banks arrangement of moving work to India, an association has asserted. A review of almost 2,000 branch administrators and staff found that 96 percent of individuals thought clients werent upbeat managing staff in India, while 83 percent thought clients got most noticeably awful help accordingly. The greater part of staff guaranteed they got grievances or unfavorable remarks about the Indian activity consistently, and a further third of individuals said they got them no less than consistently. About 66% of those addressed announced seeing altogether more blunders and slip-ups being made by the Indian activity, and 64 percent said offshoring had made it progressively hard to advance the banks items. Around 85 percent of staff figured the bank would lose numerous clients as a result of its choice to seaward work to India, while a comparable extent figured individuals would probably change to budgetary administrations organizations that were focused on the UK, as per the Lloyds TSB Group Union. Lloyds disregarding concerns Be that as it may, the association said Lloyds TSB was disregarding these worries and proceeding to move back office preparing and phone activities abroad. Steve Tatlow, aide general secretary at Lloyds TSB Group Union, stated: The study affirms what we have known from the start. That staff managing clients all day every day are managing impressive client threatening vibe at having their records taken care of abroad. The outcomes show that whatever Lloyds TSB may state about the client care gave by its India activity, swarms of clients are whining over the UK every single day of the week. Senior Management should settle on a decision. Either to proceed with cost cutting in the teeth of client restriction to its offshoring plans, or probably pull together its technique towards putting clients first. A Lloyds TSB representative stated: Customer administration is fundamental to us. The call community in Mumbai has accepted 7,000,000 brings over the previous year and we do screen the quality and take a gander at consumer loyalty. We have discovered that degrees of consumer loyalty are as high on calls to India with respect to the UK. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/cash/money.html?in_article_id=365776in_page_id=1804 The Impact of Global Sourcing on the UK Economy 2003-10, dispatched by the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM), an umbrella association for IT programming and administration associations in India, appraises that by 2010 the UK could confront a shortage of 700,000 occupations because of a maturing populace and moderate populace development. On the off chance that the issue isnt tended to it figures that financial development in the UK could slow, prompting lost à ¯Ã¢ ¿Ã¢ ½113 billion. Redistributing would not just overcome that issue, it would likewise help create additional salary. For the report guarantees that for each à ¯Ã¢ ¿Ã¢ ½100 of work redistributed seaward, up to à ¯Ã¢ ¿Ã¢ ½141 is re-put straightforwardly again into the UK economy. This perky evaluation of the advantages of sending out occupations comes despite the fact that the report recognizes that in excess of 250,000 UK employments would be lost because of offshoring. Yet, it contends that while the effect of offshoring on the UK workforce is genuine and will prompt the removal of laborers, it demands that the UK work advertise is adaptable enough to manage the issue. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/01/28/sending_jobs_overseas_could_boost/

Learn About the History of Hyperbaric Chambers

Hyperbaric chambers are used for a mode of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in which the patient breathes 100 percent oxygen at pressures greater than normal atmospheric (sea level) pressure. Hyperbaric Chambers and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy In Use for Centuries   Hyperbaric chambers and hyperbaric oxygen therapy have been in use for centuries, as early as 1662. However, hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been used clinically since the mid-1800s. HBO was tested and developed by the  U.S. Military  after World War I. It has been used safely since the 1930s to help treat deep sea divers with decompression sickness. Clinical trials in the 1950s uncovered a number of beneficial mechanisms from exposure to hyperbaric oxygen chambers. These experiments were the forerunners of contemporary applications of HBO in the clinical setting. In 1967, the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) was founded to foster the exchange of data on the physiology and medicine of commercial and military diving. The Hyperbaric Oxygen Committee was developed by the UHMS in 1976 to oversee the ethical practice of hyperbaric medicine. Oxygen Treatments   Oxygen was discovered independently by the Swedish apothecary Karl W. Scheele in 1772, and by the English amateur chemist  Joseph Priestley  (1733-1804) in August 1774. In 1783, the French physician Caillens was the first doctor reported to have used oxygen therapy as a remedy. In 1798, the Pneumatic Institution for inhalation gas therapy was founded by Thomas Beddoes (1760-1808), a physician-philosopher, in Bristol, England. He employed Humphrey Davy (1778-1829), a brilliant young scientist as superintendent of the Institute, and the engineer  James Watt  (1736-1819), to help manufacture the gases. The institute was an outgrowth of the new knowledge about gases (such as oxygen and nitrous oxide) and their manufacture. However, therapy was based on Beddoes generally incorrect assumptions about disease; for example, Beddoes assumed that some diseases would naturally respond to a higher or lower oxygen concentration. As might be expected, the treatments offered no real clinical benefit, and the Institute succumbed in 1802. How Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Works Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized room or tube. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has long been used to treat decompression sickness, a hazard of scuba diving. Other conditions treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy include serious infections, bubbles of air in your blood vessels, and wounds that wont heal as a result of diabetes or radiation injury. In a hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber, the air pressure is increased to three times higher than normal air pressure. When this happens, your lungs can gather more oxygen than would be possible breathing pure oxygen at normal air pressure. Your blood then carries this oxygen throughout your body which helps fight bacteria and stimulate the release of substances called growth factors and stem cells, which promote healing. Your bodys tissues need an adequate supply of oxygen to function. When tissue is injured, it requires even more oxygen to survive. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy increases the amount of oxygen your blood can carry. An increase in blood oxygen temporarily restores normal levels of blood gases and tissue function to promote healing and fight infection.

Everyday Life Multiculturalism

Questions: 1.Introduce and explore an example of bridging work or multiculturalism from below. Your answer must make use of the ideas we have discussed about everyday multiculturalism.2. Describe an example of a work practice or context that is gendered and describe how social systems sustain this everyday gendering of work.3. Using an example, explain how the discourses and technologies of medicine have expanded into areas of our everyday lives not previously considered as medical problems. Answers: 1. In Amanda Wises Multiculturalism from Below, different examples are given of incidents of multiculturalism in Australia. The incidents were collected from interviews conducted in Griffith and Ashfield. These two places are home to people from different cultural background. In these incidents, one example can be taken of Lakshmi, the Indian immigrant who moved to Ashfield. She built a transversal goods exchange relationship with her Lebanese neighbor Frank first, then with her Italian and Anglo-Celtic neighbors. The circulation of vegetables, fruits and seeds is a way of facilitating sociality across a broad area. Because of this kind of exchanges, the Australian backyards have grown diversely, just like the countrys culture. Such exchanges exhibit a micro-moral-economy, which is a result of exchange of surplus produce. These exchanges and gifting aids are building relationships between neighbors or kin (Harris, 2013). These kind of friendly atmosphere forms a diverse cultural back ground in households. The individuals who are at the centre of these exchanges might not be aware of their contribution to the development of social relationships and cultural intersections. The exchanged materials are what that matters the most. Gifts come with a personal touch, a thought and sensual quality. In the incident mentioned, food as a product facilitates exchange of recipes and their traditional histories. The nature of the food mixes with the emotions of reciprocity and care represented in the gifts. Such transversal exchanges can generate sensory and descriptive intersections that could result in cross cultural relations and networks (Flowers Swan, 2012). 2. Gender bias is a controversial issue in todays world. Such biases make the workplace environment edgy and the possibility of lawsuits being filed high. Keeping the lawsuits aside, it is to be understood that gender bias is a prejudice and discrimination and should not be present in organizations. However, these incidents can be easily fond occurring in companies, and in different forms (Bohnet, Van Geen Bazerman, 2015). The most common form of bias that can be seen is the allocation of responsibilities between men and women in organizations. If any task that requires heavy lifting or physical exertion, men are mostly approached to complete it. If a woman even volunteers to help in the task, she is dealt with an offhanded behavior that she is not capable enough, or cannot help in completing the job. Studies can show that the women can defeat men in tasks that people cannot even think of. This kind of behavior shows that at workplace such inequality is common and accepted. These kinds of incidents are mirrored in standard positional responsibilities also. Women are generally considered more suitable for secretarial work, and not for first line responsibilities. This sort of gender bias is extensively prevalent in all kinds of business organizations. Because of this kind of discriminations organizations lose out on hiring the best candidate for a job. Hiring must be one on the basis skills and experien ce, and not on gender. Organizations should be open to the idea of women working in roles that are traditionally filled in by men and vice versa (Heilman, 2012). 3. It is widely known that modern medicines have made huge advancements in the last couple of years and many consider them as a huge revolution. It obviously has its own benefits; however, it has its own side effects too. A major side effect can be considered in the form of usage of medicines in cases that are not considered conventional medical problems in terms of healthcare organizations and physicians. Such usage can sometimes even result in iatrogenic deaths, or death caused by doctors. Advancements in medicine become questionable in such cases, in terms of necessity, outcome or application. Earlier forms of traditional and proven effective medications have been ridiculed and put away, without even understanding their purpose or affectivity. In old times, medicines were provided by the physicians after proper diagnosis and checking the intensity. If illnesses were less serious, like common cold, and were solvable with time and a little care or rest, then there were generally no issuances of medicines or remedies (Hillier Jewell, 2013). The situation has altered in todays world. Even at the displaying of minor symptoms of common illnesses, people start taking medicines, without understanding how much dosage is required, if at all required or not, and before even consulting with any physician. Popping of a couple of over-the-counter paracetamol tablets solve the issue. Like in cases of high blood pressure, drugs are used to drop the pressure before understanding why the body is reacting like that in the first place. The situation has come to this stage because of the easily available remedies and presence of chemist shops everywhere. Over-the counter medicines have acted as a catalyst in these situations. Convincing and consistent traditional treatments or prescribing from doctors have no more use today (Leder Krucoff, 2014). References Bohnet, I., Van Geen, A., Bazerman, M. (2015). Battle of Seven Pines in the Civil War

Battle of Seven Pines in the Civil War The Battle of Seven Pines took place May 31, 1862, during the American Civil War (1861-1865) and represented the farthest advance of Major General George B. McClellans 1862 Peninsula Campaign. In the wake of the Confederate victory at the First Battle of Bull Run on July 21, 1861, a series of changes commenced in the Union high command. The following month, McClellan, who had won a series of minor victories in western Virginia was summoned to Washington, DC and tasked with building an army and capturing the Confederate capital at Richmond. Constructing the Army of the Potomac that the summer and fall, he commenced planning his offensive against Richmond for the spring of 1862. To the Peninsula To reach Richmond, McClellan sought to transport his army down the Chesapeake Bay to Union-held Fortress Monroe. From there, it would push up the Peninsula between the James and York Rivers to Richmond. This approach would permit him to flank and avoid General Joseph E. Johnstons forces in northern Virginia. Moving forward in mid-March, McClellan began shifting around 120,000 men to the Peninsula. To oppose the Union advance, Major General John B. Magruder possessed approximately 11,000-13,000 men.   Establishing himself near the old American Revolution battlefield at Yorktown, Magruder built a defensive line running south along the Warwick River and ending at Mulberry Point. This was supported by a second line to the west that passed in front of Williamsburg. Lacking sufficient numbers to fully man the Warwick Line, Magruder used a variety of theatrics to delay McClellan during the Siege of Yorktown.   This allowed Johnston time to move south with the bulk of his army. Reaching the area, Confederate forces swelled to around 57,000. The Union Advance Realizing this amounted to less than half of McClellans command and that the Union commander was planning a large-scale bombardment, Johnston ordered Confederate forces to retreat from the Warwick Line on the night of May 3. Covering his withdrawal with an artillery bombardment, his men slipped away unnoticed.  The Confederate departure was discovered the following morning and an unprepared McClellan directed Brigadier General George Stonemans cavalry and infantry under Brigadier General Edwin V. Sumner to mount a pursuit.   Slowed due to muddy roads, Johnston ordered Major General James Longstreet, whose division was serving as the armys rearguard, to man a section of the Williamsburg defensive line to buy the retreating Confederates time (Map). In the resulting Battle of Williamsburg on May 5, Confederate troops succeeded in delaying the Union pursuit. Moving west, McClellan sent several divisions up the York River by water to Elthams Landing. As Johnston withdrew into the Richmond defenses, Union troops moved up the Pamunkey River and established as series of supply bases. Plans Concentrating his army, McClellan routinely reacted to inaccurate intelligence that led him to believe that he was significantly outnumbered and displayed the cautiousness that would become a hallmark of his career. Bridging the Chickahominy River, his army faced Richmond with about two-thirds of its strength north of the river and one-third to the south. On May 27, Brigadier General Fitz John Porters V Corps engaged the enemy at Hanover Court House. Though a Union victory, the fighting led McClellan to worry about the safety of his right flank and made him hesitant to transfer more troops south of the  Chickahominy.   Across the lines, Johnston, who recognized that his army could not withstand a siege, made plans to attack McClellans forces. Seeing that Brigadier General Samuel P. Heintzelmans III Corps and Brigadier General Erasmus D. Keyes IV Corps were isolated south of the  Chickahominy, he intended to throw two-thirds of his army against them. The remaining third would be used to hold McClellans other corps in place north of the river. Tactical control of the attack was delegated to Major General James Longstreet. Johnstons plan called for Longstreets men to fall upon IV Corps from three directions, destroy it, then move north to crush III Corps against the river.      Armies Commanders: Union Major General George B. McClellanaround 40,000 engaged Confederate General Joseph E. JohnstonGeneral Gustavus W. Smitharound 40,000 engaged A Bad Start Moving forward on May 31, the execution of Johnstons plan went badly from the start, with the assault beginning five hours late and with only a fraction of the intended troops participating. This was due to Longstreet using the wrong road and Major General Benjamin Huger receiving orders that did not give a start time for the attack. In position on time as ordered,  Major General D.H. Hills division waited for their comrades to arrive. A 1:00 PM, Hill took matters in his own hands and advanced his men against Brigadier General Silas Caseys IV Corps division. Hill Attacks Pushing back the Union skirmish lines, Hills men launched assaults against Caseys earthworks to the west of Seven Pines. As Casey called for reinforcements, his inexperienced men fought hard to maintain their position. Ultimately overwhelmed, they fell back to a second line of earthworks at Seven Pines. Requesting aid from Longstreet, Hill received one brigade to support his efforts. With the arrival of these men around 4:40 PM, Hill moved against the second Union line (Map). Attacking, his men encountered the remnants of Caseys division as well as those of Brigadier Generals Darius N. Couch and Philip Kearny (III Corps). In an effort to dislodge the defenders, Hill directed four regiments to attempt to turn IV Corps right flank.   This attack had some success and forced Union troops back to the Williamsburg Road. Union resolve soon stiffened and subsequent assaults were defeated. Johnston Arrives Learning of the fighting, Johnston advanced with four brigades from Brigadier General William H.C. Whitings division. These soon encountered Brigadier General William W. Burns brigade from Brigadier General John Sedgwicks II Corps division and began pushing it back. Learning of the fighting to the south of the Chickahominy, Sumner, commanding II Corps, had commenced moving his men over the rain-swollen river. Engaging the enemy to the north of Fair Oaks Station and Seven Pines, the remainder of Sedgwicks men were able to halt Whiting and inflict heavy losses.       As darkness approached fighting died out along the lines. During this time, Johnston was struck in the right shoulder by a bullet and in the chest by shrapnel. Falling from his horse, he broke two ribs and his right shoulder blade. He was replaced by Major General Gustavus W. Smith as army commander. During the night, Brigadier General Israel B. Richardsons II Corps division arrived and took a place in the center of the Union lines. June 1 The next morning, Smith resumed attacks on the Union line. Beginning around 6:30 AM, two of Hugers brigades, led by Brigadier Generals William Mahone and Lewis Armistead, hit Richardsons lines. Though they had some initial success, the arrival of Brigadier General David B. Birneys brigade ended the threat after fierce fighting. The Confederates fell back and fighting ended around 11:30 AM. Later that day, Confederate President Jefferson Davis arrived at Smiths headquarters. As Smith had been indecisive, bordering on a nervous breakdown, since Johnstons wounding, Davis elected to replace him with his military advisor,  General Robert E. Lee (Map). Aftermath The Battle of Seven Pines cost McClellan 790 killed, 3,594 wounded, and 647 captured/missing. Confederate losses numbered 980 killed, 4,749 wounded, and 405 captured/missing. The battle marked the high point of McClellans Peninsula Campaign and the high casualties shook the Union commanders confidence. In the long term, it had a profound influence upon the war as Johnstons wounding led to the elevation of Lee. An aggressive commander, Lee would lead the Army of Northern Virginia for the remainder of the war and won several key victories over Union forces. For over three weeks after Seven Pines, the Union army sat idle until the fighting was renewed at the Battle of Oak Grove on June 25. The battle marked the beginning of the Seven Days Battles which saw Lee force McClellan away from Richmond and back down the Peninsula.

The Edict of Nantes essays

The Edict of Nantes essays Here in America most Americans aren't very aware of the freedom that has been bestowed upon us. Thousands of men, women, and children died in various wars over the years to protect our basic rights: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. As for myself I know I take that freedom for granted and I know many others have also. If we believe in one God or six gods, it doesn't matter here in America. You won't be killed for your religious beliefs unless you're some crazy activist. Up until the late 1500's that was the case. If you did not follow the religious beliefs of the King or the Lord of the land you were killed or exiled from the land. In 1598 King Henry IV passed the Edict of Nantes granting religious freedom to the commoners, also known as Huguenots. Henry IV (1589-161O) was the Protestant king of Navarre who led the Huguenot cause during the French wars of religion. His grandmother was Marguerite de Navarre and his mother Jeanne d'Albret, both educated and remarkably talented women. Henry achieved the French throne through a series of accidents, the last of which was the assassination of Henry III in 1589. It was clear that no Protestant could ever command the allegiance of the mass of French people or peaceful rule in the Catholic capital of Paris. Henry converted to Catholicism, defeated his enemies, and ended the long years of religious warfare. The Edict of Nantes was the compromise settlement that granted limited toleration for the Huguenots. It was a landmark in the history of religious toleration, though its main features were watered down under Louis Xlll. The Edict was finally rescinded under Louis XIII in 1685. The Edict of Nantes ended the series of religious wars between Catholics and Protestants that ravaged France from 1562 to 1598. During these wars, several ineffective treaties were concluded, embodying privileges for the Huguenots. These "French wars of religion" pitted Calvini ...

Four Things To Do to Increase One’s Level of Contentment and Happiness Essay Example for Free

Four Things To Do to Increase One’s Level of Contentment and Happiness Essay The learned Viktor Frankl contends that â€Å"chance decides what happens but we decide how to take it† (cited in Southwick, et. al. , 2006, p. 162). For someone who has been through the most tragic circumstances of human existence, Frankl is surely someone who knows pretty well how happiness is to be pursued in one’s life. While it can be argued that happiness is a state of human living which cannot be singularly defined, we – human persons that we are – nevertheless know what brings it about or how it affects our general take of life. Pursuing Happiness All throughout One’s Life The basic thrust of this paper is to argue that our state of contentment or happiness is something that we human persons can always choose to pursue. By adopting Frankl’s philosophy, we can say that a person can always choose the path towards happiness against the backdrop of different life circumstances and issues that come with one’s lifespan development. First, one can always choose to discover his or her crafts, potentials and talents as a way to appreciate one’s giftedness and uniqueness. This is a very potent element that contributes well to one’s happiness; and this usually happens during one’s late childhood and adolescent stages. The discovery of our uniqueness gives us a sense of who we are. But even when, for instance, one is not gifted enough, one can still discover certain strains of uniqueness to be appreciated. This is crucial because it can give us an initial taste of our sense of directedness and purpose. Second, a person needs to choose the kind of relationships that work in order to attain a level of happiness as well. This is especially true for those who are at the early adulthood stage. Growing up, it would be normal to feel that we need someone to complete us; and finding that suitable someone is notably crucial for this stage. Many people end up either unhappy or miserable because they did not either take the courage to pursue a person whom they love or feel powerless to break free from relationships that just do not work. But finding true happiness is about choosing the right relationships that could nurture, and not defeat life. Third, in order to secure happiness, one must always face life-crises with a brimming sense of optimism. This surely is a case of no little importance, as it is not uncommon to learn that many middle-agers suddenly lose their sense of meaning at a time when life-crises emerging from home and workplace start to take their toll. Crises, it needs to be remembered, cannot be avoided. But they are defining moments that can either make or break us. Increasing one’s state of happiness during these poignant moments therefore necessitates a commitment to hope – i. e. , one faces life problems with a sense of optimism. If one can face problems convinced that he or she can successfully get out of it, then it is like facing a battle half-winning it already. Fourth, one can look at his or her life under the lenses of accomplishment and gratitude so as to be happy. This especially applies to those who are in the twilight of their lives. When one becomes bitter every time he or she looks back at the past, it effectively robs a person with a sense of contentment and happiness. Instead, looking back at life with eyes fixed on the accomplishments and blessings that one has done or received in his or her life surely elicits an incomparable sense of contentment, happiness and pride. Conclusion This paper therefore concludes that a person is always empowered to make a choice in order to increase his or her level of contentment or happiness. In any lifespan development or stages, the choice to uphold sense of happiness is always a concrete possibility; i. e. , we can always choose to discover one’s giftedness, choose the relationships that could make us happy, choose to face life-crises with hopefulness and choose to be thankful in our lives. In the final analysis, it must be ultimately argued that we are the ones responsible for our own happiness.

The Matrix Dreams and Senses Essay examples - 651 Words

In a dream, humans can experience any sort of sensory experience but visual experiences are the most common. They draw upon the dreamer’s own memory and imagination to build upon. The movie â€Å"The Matrix† put forth the idea that one could live an entire life as a vegetable being fed an illusionary life via brain stimulation. The plot not only raises questions about the relationship of mind to body and the uncertainty of knowledge, but also more modern concerns about political power in a cyber-infected world. Carolyn Korsmeyer examines the issue of sense experience and how the movie portrays the classic problems of perception in her essay â€Å"Seeing, Believing, Touching, Truth.† She links her evaluation of the use of senses†¦show more content†¦Korsmeyer correlates that with a horror-provoking thought experiment that supposes that â€Å"we are but brains in a vat, and only electrical impulses provide us with a mental life.† The movie does n ot have the time to explore this problem to its fullest and Descartes only used it as a means to getting to the justification for his own existence. I agree with Korsmeyer that it is highly improbable that this is the case for the current human world, for if it were the case, how would we have a reference point to the basis of the different sensual perceptions we come in contact with every day? Both philosophers and the movie rank the experiences we receive from our senses in a traditional order. Vision and hearing are ranked highest because they require a distance from the object in question to operate. Transporation and Disturibution Management

Question: Discuss how you will implement these initiatives and what changes in the organization may be required to overcome any dissention or resistance that is likely to be met. Answer: Introduction The rapid increase in technological advancements has provided the business sector with huge advancements that has led to numerous growths in revenue and management. Various technological advancements in the 21st century has mostly influenced and boosted the business sector. One of the most intriguing advancements has been noticed in the logistics sector providing effectiveness in the transportation and distribution management (Advanced transportation management systems and transportation system management, 2007). Logistics sector has been the most influential and has become the need of the hour with the fast paced competitive market scenario. About the Company Tesco PLC is a British multinational basic need and general stock retailer headquartered in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England, United Kingdom. It is the third biggest retailer on the planet measured by profits and second-biggest retailer on the planet measured by incomes. It has stores in 12 nations crosswise over Asia and Europe and is the staple business sector pioneer in the UK (where it has a piece of the overall industry of around 28.4%), Ireland, Hungary, Malaysia, and Thailand(Leahy, 2012). Tesco was established in 1919 by Jack Cohen as a gathering of business sector stalls. The Tesco name initially showed up in 1924, after Cohen acquired a shipment of tea from T. E. Stockwell and consolidated those initials with the initial two letters of his surname, and the primary Tesco store opened in 1931 in Burnt Oak, Barnet. His business extended quickly, and by 1939 he had more than 100 Tesco stores the nation over. Initially a UK basic supply retailer, Tesco has enhanced top ographically since the mid 1990s and into ranges, for example, the retailing of books, garments, gadgets, furniture, toys, petrol and programming; money related administrations; telecoms and web administrations. The 1990s saw Tesco reposition itself; it moved from being a down-business sector high-volume minimal effort retailer, to one which claims crosswise over numerous social gatherings, by offering items going from its "Tesco Value" things (dispatched 1993) to its "Tesco Finest" reach. This widening of its allure was effective, and saw the chain develop from 500 stores in the mid-1990s to 2,500 stores fifteen years after the fact. Tesco is recorded on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. It had a business sector capitalization of around 18.1 billion starting 22 April 2015, the 28th-biggest of any organization with an essential posting on the London Stock Exchange(LLC, 2010). Incoterms selection consideration These generic set of internationally set standards are considered to be a measure to save the traders time, cost and is further considered to be invaluable and indispensable when it comes to International trade practices. There are number of incoterms such as, FCA, DDU, CFR, CPT Etc... Depending upon these trade terms, which the parties to trade agree upon, the parties, can become less worried in regards for the insurance, freight and other costs in the future of their trade agreement(Zhao, 2014). Each of the Incoterms have a previously stipulated set of rules and regulations, which further affect the mode of transportation the company will be using, and the capability of the transportation being used for the trade purpose ("Distribution in inner cities", 2007). At present the set of Incoterms being used by the company is governed by the Incoterms 2010 which include; Rules for all modes of transport Free Carrier (FCA) Ex Works (EXW) Carriage and insurance paid to (CIP) Carriage paid to (CPT) Delivered at terminal (DAT) Delivered at Place (DAP) Delivered duty paid (DDP)(Gopalia, 2016) Rules for inland waterway and sea transport Cost and freight (CFR) Free Alongside Ship (FAS) Cost, Insurance and freight (CIF) Free on board (FOB) Now, here are a few Intercoms which are considered to be the best possible set of rules and regulations set for the buyer and the seller respectively: Best Incoterms for buyers FOB: Free on board incoterms is available for waterway or sea transport only. The origin point is the FOB point. Here, the buyer is in control of the freight and seller is liable to make the delivery to the origin port (Flood, Callson, Jablonski, Flood, 2014). DDU: Delivery duty paid is available with all modes of transportation. Here the seller has to deliver the goods to the buyers place and is liable for any sort of damages. The custom clearance is carried out by the buyer (Christopher, M., 2005). Best incoterms for sellers CFR: cost and freight is available for ocean transportation only. Here the delivery point has to be a sea port however, the seller is liable until the freight reaches the port and from here the seller cannot be held for any sort of damages and losses. FCA: Free carrier is available for all sorts of transportation modes. The origin might be the premises of the seller or the terminal of the carrier (Grant, 2008). The loading charges are sent to the buyer in this case. Furthermore, the buyer is in control of the freight routing. Carrier selection criteria Selecting the carrier for the transportation of goods is a tedious task. It is the responsibility of the logistics department to make certain that the carrier chosen for the transportation, be it via land, air or water is efficient enough to make the delivery in due time, keep the goods safe from damage and is cost effective(Scott, 2011). In order to make proper selection of the goods this section has been segregated into two parts: Transportation goals and needs. Transportation planning. Transportation goals and needs Before the goods are transported to their destination special care must be taken and requires a reliable transportation carrier which would be able to move the goods safely, quickly and with minimum risk of damage and thefts (Kassabian, 2013). This essentially depends on: Capacity of the carrier: the carriers capacity should be top notch concern as; the condition of the goods would greatly depend on it. If the carrier is bigger then there would remain extra space, which would in turn upset the way the goods were arranged at the origin point, resulting in them to tumble and get damaged. Similarly a smaller carrier might not be able to carry the entire quantity of goods. Cost incurred: the cost that would be incurred by employing a certain carrier is an important aspect ("Management information", 2013). This is as the cost should not exceed more than 30% of the total amount earned from the transaction. Efficient route planning: time is essence in logistics therefore, proper planning of the route must be chalked out and also it is required to ascertain that the carrier selected for the route is appropriate. For instance, if the delivery can be made earlier by means of using an air carrier mode, then using a land carrier would result in incurring extra cost, time and resource. Transportation planning Transportation planning is the activity in which the logistics management delves into the various ways the goods can be delivered to their destination without any hassles. This activity further relates to knowing the highway system, air/ sea/ inland water routes and also the traffic facilities. There are three aspects which determine an effective transport planning and they are: Efficiency: it essentially relates to the effective managing of the available resources. Depending upon the nature of the transportation required the management is required to make use of the existing alternatives at hand and ascertain that the goods are delivered efficiently, in good time and condition (Rushton, Croucher, Baker, 2010). Quality: the quality of the transportation service affects the condition of the goods being transported. Equity: to meet the demands of the clients properly and without any complaint in regards to transportation. Carrier relationship management Being a typical logistics company carrier relationship management is an essential aspect of the company. The company takes pride on being able to meet up with its clients from both ends overall business needs. The company fashions its services in a manner that they are able to come to a middle ground with their clients. As already mentioned being a logistics company the company credits its success to the efficient carrier relationship management strategies (Transportation management, 2010). This is achieved by carefully designed contract and tariff rules which enable them to help their carrier operators make the most out of each of their trips. This further enables the company to maintain a good relation with its carriers. An effective carrier relationship management depends upon two essential aspects: Identifying the Goals and needs. Outsourcing transportation services. Identifying the goals and needs It is the basic job of an employer to make certain that its valued employees are satisfied. A satisfied employee is capable of performing more for the employer when compared to a unsatisfied employee. Furthermore, the goals that an employer sets for the organization is explicitly carried out by the employees and the more efficient and loyal the employee is to the organization he or she is capable of performing better. This is the philosophy that drives this particular logistic brand (Kassabian, 2013). Here, the carrier relationship management team is responsible for seeing to the needs of the various operators and make sure that a middle ground is reached between them prior to their departure with goods. The carrier operators are paid depending upon the length of the route of the delivery. In addition, it is the responsibility of the carrier relationship management to make sure the goods are delivered to and from the carriers in the stipulated time. Outsourcing transportation services In situations when the companys carriers are all engaged it is the responsibility of the carrier relationship management team outsource the transportation services. This usually incurs extra costs than what the company incurs when using its own carriers but, in such situations it is required that the delivery be made by means of outsourcing the transportation services (Flood, Callson, Jablonski, Flood, 2014). The carrier relationship management team requires keeping in mind the following while engaging such services: The services should not cost more than 15% than what the company is paying to its own carriers. The carriers selected for the job are reliable or not. There should be a clear agreement in between the parties in regards to the liabilities. The carrier company should be well aware of the nature and reputation of the company and is capable of functioning accordingly. Conclusion The entire report prolifically highlights the transportation and distribution management focusing on the effectiveness of three major aspects of transportation management i.e. incoterms selection consideration, carrier selection criteria and carrier relationship management. Tesco being one of the most influential companies in the global market has taken these three aspects into consideration simultaneously (Cooley, 2016). The strategic initiatives are the key to success of Tesco providing a significant platform for relying on the core competencies which helps the company to move forward in the logistics sector with definitive operational and financial performance. The three aspects of transportation and distribution management significantly provide a detailed overview about how Tesco works and analyzes the market irrespective of the competition in the global market.
